Chiropractic Care

CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE is a safe and effective way of treating musculoskeletal conditions and acute or chronic pain by introducing motion into joints.  Chiropractic is based on the theory that proper alignment of the body allows for self healing and restoration without the use of outside interventions such as surgery or medication. The main mode of treatment in Chiropractic is Manipulation.

Manipulation is a technique that introduces a safe amount of force into a joint to restore normal range of motion.  This force increases the circulation within the joint and surrounding tissue to help reduce pain and foster healing

FAQ

What conditions can a Chiropractor treat?
Doctors of Chiropractic medicine care for patients of all ages, with a variety of conditions.  Chiropractors are well known for their ability to treat and manage pain; back pain, neck pain and headaches. They also care for patients with a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints.  These painful conditions often involve the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury.  The benefits of chiropractic care also extend to general health issues since our body structure affects our overall function. Chiropractors also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification.

Do I need a referral to see the Chiropractor?
In most cases, you do not need a referral to see a Doctor of Chiropractic.  However, certain insurance plans may require a referral prior to making an appointment. Please check with your insurance plan or we can do so for you if requested.

Is chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug –free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. As with any treatment or therapy in medicine Chiropractic is not 100% free of adverse effects. Many patients feel immediate relief after a chiropractic treatment. Some patients have reported mild soreness or aching following a treatment.  This feeling is very similar what people feel after a good work out. Adequate water consumption can help relieve this side effect.

Neck injuries caused by improper sleeping habits or motor vehicle accidents as well as many types of headaches can be treated with Chiropractic manipulation.  Cervical manipulations work by improving the mobility of the joints in the neck, relaxing the muscles in the area and in turn reducing muscle spasms in the neck. Although cervical manipulation has been shown to be a very safe procedure there have been reports associating cervical manipulations with certain kinds of strokes and vascular damage in the neck.  Recent studies show that these forms of injuries often take place spontaneously in those with underlying vascular conditions.  In this population of patients, vascular injuries can even occur following everyday activities such as turning of the neck while driving, extension of the neck while painting a ceiling, or even swimming.  These injuries often result in neck pain or headaches leading to visit to the doctor.  The cause of injury in these cases is not the result of the medical care.  The risk of Injury through a cervical manipulation is 1in 5.85 million which is less than the chances of getting hit by lightening.

At Calibrate Health, we take care to perform a thorough history and examination on all our patients before treatment.  If you are visiting with neck pain or headache, please be very specific about your symptoms.  You may need to be referred to a different specialist depending on your history and symptoms.

When compared to the risk of injury due to the use of NSAIDS for pain, Chiropractic is associated with a significantly lower risk of side effects.  According to a study from the American Journal of Gastroenterology, approximately one-third of all hospitalizations and deaths related to gastrointestinal bleeding can be attributed to the use of aspirin or NSAID painkillers like ibuprofen.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?
Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and may experience many types of falls and injuries from everyday activities and from participating in sports. Injuries may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is tailored to the individual patient. In the hands of a highly skilled and gentle practitioner, children can also benefit for chiropractic care.

Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?
Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees, among others. Chiropractic care is also available to active-duty members of the armed forces at more than 60 military bases and is available to veterans at 36 major veterans medical facilities. Please inquire about cash rates, if you insurance does not cover chiropractic care.

Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint when it is adjusted, which results in the release of these gas bubbles. There is usually no discomfort involved.
